Brno · Moravia · since the block was built in 1934

Sixty-two rooms behind the longest ribbon windows in Brno

The building was drawn as offices: flat roof, horizontal glazing, a paternoster running the full height of the stairwell. The typists are long gone, but the shaft stayed, lit from below, and the chrome handrails are the originals, worn to a warm grey by eighty years of hands.

The rooms are quiet and square, and breakfast runs late. The hotel also has its own casino inside the building, two floors up from the front desk, so you get there without going outside.

Stay

Three ways to sleep in a 1930s office block

The Ribbon

A corner double where the glazing runs unbroken across two walls, so the room fills with light from about seven in the morning.

  • Corner aspect
  • Blackout blinds
  • Desk

The Paternoster

A compact single on the stairwell side, looking straight into the old shaft and its row of warm bulbs. It is small and cheap to heat, and oddly calming.

  • Single bed
  • Shaft view

The Flat Roof

Top-floor twin with its own door onto the terrace, which means you can stand outside in your coat at two in the morning if you want to.

  • Terrace door
  • Twin beds
  • Bath

Eat & drink

Four rooms, four reasons to come down

Kantýna Funkce

On the ground floor, at long tables, the old staff canteen is back at work. The cooking is Moravian and unfussy: svíčková on Sundays, soup every day at eleven, and bread from a bakery four streets away.

Chrome Bar

Eleven stools at a zinc counter, with a short list of Moravian whites poured by the glass. It opens at four and gets loud around nine.

Zrno Counter

A coffee window in the lobby wall, with espresso, one cake and newspapers on a stick. It opens at six for people catching early trains.

Terasa 7

On the roof in summer you get beer, cold plates and the city spread flat to the south. It closes when it rains, which in Brno is often enough to make the good evenings feel earned.

On the second floor

The casino floor: Hopfield Hall Casino

18+

Hopfield Hall Casino is on the second floor of Hopfield Hall, one level above the lobby. You get there by the chrome-railed stairs that wind past the old paternoster shaft, or by the lift if you'd rather skip the stairs, and either way you stay inside the building. The casino is a small room with a few tables, a short bar under the ribbon windows and space for maybe forty people on a busy Saturday. It keeps evening hours only, so there is no daytime play.

The dress code is short: no sportswear and no beachwear. Entry is 18 and over, and staff check photo ID at the door on every visit, even for guests they served the night before. Limits are set on the floor by the team on duty and are not printed on a board, so ask one of them before you sit down. Self-exclusion from the casino is arranged in person at reception. Speak to the duty manager and the desk will handle it that evening.

It is a land-based casino inside the hotel. The website offers no online casino games and takes no bets, deposits or payments.

Getting around

Brno is small enough to walk, flat enough to mean it

  • Main station Brno hlavní nádraží is a nine-minute walk south, past the market and down through the arcade.
  • Trams Lines 4 and 12 stop at the end of the street. A single ticket covers twenty minutes, which is more than you need.
  • Trains Vienna Hauptbahnhof in about ninety minutes, Prague in two and a half hours, both direct and roughly hourly.
  • Airport Brno–Tuřany sits fifteen minutes east by taxi; Vienna airport is the bigger option, by coach from the station.
